WEST (December 19, 2012)--Fire severely damaged a house Wednesday afternoon in West, leaving a woman homeless and her pet dog dead.

Firefighters responded at around 2:20 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a structure fire at 507 West Spruce, just south of downtown West, where the first units on the scene reported heavy smoke coming from the roof of the single-story wood frame home.

The woman who lived in the house was not home at the time of the fire, but her dog died before firefighters could rescue it.

A West police officer said it appeared the fire started in the attic, but the cause hasn’t been determined.
