WACO (May 2, 2013)--A Waco man was held Thursday in the McLennan County Jail after police say he led officers on a chase with young child in his car and then ran into a heavily wooded area with the child in his arms.
Troy James Douglas, 36, was ordered held in lieu of bonds totaling $10,000, charged with evading arrest or detention and abandoning or endangering a child.
The child, who was not identified because of his age, was taken into CPS custody, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.
Swanton said an officer attempted to stop a car for a traffic violation Wednesday afternoon near Imperial Drive and Loop 340, but as the officer got out of his patrol car, the driver of the vehicle sped off.
The chase ended in the parking lot of the Hollywood Jewel Theater where the fleeing driver’s car ran into a culvert and got stuck, Swanton said.
The man jumped from the car with the young child in his arms and fled into a heavily wooded area behind the theater, Swanton said.
Swanton said police at the scene requested a K-9 unit and a helicopter to help search for the man whom officers later found and arrested.
Both Douglas and the child were taken by ambulance to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center for evaluation, Swanton said.
Upon release from Hillcrest the man was taken to county jail and the child was placed in CPS custody.
Swanton said CPS also is involved in an active investigation searching for the child's mother and a second child, but so far has not located them.
