(November 15, 2012)--Bell County’s largest nongovernment employer announced Thursday that new hires will need to be tobacco-free beginning January 1.

All Scott & White Healthcare facilities are smoke-free but now applicants looking for a job will need to be also.

Beginning in 2013, job seekers applying for positions within the company will be asked about their tobacco use and new hires will be randomly tested for tobacco use.

“Even those of us who are non-smokers are at risk through secondhand smoke. We have an obligation to not only treat disease, but also prevent it and protect others from potential harm,” Scott & White Healthcare President and CEO Robert W. Pryor, MD, MBA said.

The new staffing policy will be in effect for all Scott & White Hospitals, clinics and affiliated businesses like Scott & White Health Plan and Scott & White Hospice and Homecare.

The policy excludes hospital partners like Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center and Metroplex Hospital System.

There are currently 14,000 Scott & White Healthcare employees in the service area which covers 29,000 square miles.
