WACO (May 1, 2013)--McLennan Community College police arrested a student on campus Tuesday after they found a semi-automatic handgun in a backpack that was left inside a campus building.

Michael Lynn Childs, 34, was held Wednesday in the McLennan County Jail facing a charge of possessing a weapon in a place where weapons are prohibited.

MCC Public Information Officer Lisa Wilhelm said MCC police found the semi-automatic handgun inside the backpack at around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday inside the Learning Technology Center.

Information about whether the handgun was loaded was not available.

Police used video surveillance records to identify a person who left the backpack where it was found and following the identification arrested a suspect on campus.

Wilhelm said no one was injured and no threats were made.

The Learning Technology Center is where the campus library and cafeteria are housed, she said.
