WACO (August 6, 2012)—Traffic will be rerouted Tuesday morning on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard near Brazos Park East as Waco police conduct a follow-up investigation into a fiery weekend crash that left two people dead and a third in critical condition.
At around 2 a.m. Saturday a driver lost control of a northbound 2003 Ford Mustang on MLK.
The car left the road, went through a ditch, crashed into a tree and caught on fire.
One passenger, Stephanie Perez, 22, of Garland, died at the scene and the driver Eric Wardell, 28, died later at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center.
A second passenger, Dustin Wardell, 23, was taken to Hillcrest where he remained in critical condition Monday.
Police plan to close the northbound lane of MLK at around 8 a.m. Tuesday between the bridge over the Brazos River and the curve next to Brazos Park East.
Southbound traffic will be directed onto the shoulder and northbound traffic will be directed into the southbound lane while investigators are at the scene.
Police are urging residents to avoid the area altogether Tuesday morning and said long traffic delays are possible.
