MCLENNAN COUNTY (October 12, 2013) -- State troopers are investigating a fatal highway accident east of Waco.
The accident occurred just before 3 p.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 84, just west of Farm to Market 939.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Trooper D.L. Wilson said a Fort Taurus was eastbound on U.S. Highway 84 when the driver it lost control and the car veered into oncoming traffic, hitting a 2013 Hyundai head-on.
The accident occurred during a heavy rain storm.
The driver of the Hyundai, Virginia Olivarez, 61, of Mexia, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the Hyundai, Olivarez's mother Mary Jordan, 85, of Buffalo, was taken to an area hospital where she later died from her injuries.
The 22-year-old driver of the Ford Taurus, Erik Escobedo-Contreras was taken to an area hospital and was last listed in stable condition.
A passenger in the Taurus, Jose Perez, 18, was also transported to the hospital for treatment and was last listed in fair condition.
An investigation will determine whether charges will be filed in connection with the deadly crash, Wilson said.
