Fonda Jones, (20), of Waco was seriously injured Friday evening, 08/29/2008, after the car she was driving was struck in the driver’s side door after a pickup truck ran the red light at the intersection of 18th and Franklin.
Just after 8:00pm. Ms. Jones and two friends, Kelvin Tomlinson, (19), of Waco and Patrick Lucas, (39), also of Waco were traveling east bound on Franklin. As Ms. Jones entered the intersection on a green light a pickup driven by Benjamin Martinez, (21), of Waco ran the red light. After the crash Martinez fled the scene but was located later and arrested. Martinez was transported to McLennan County Jail where he was charged with fleeing from the scene of an accident. Jones and her passengers were transported to Hillcrest Hospital were Jones remains in critical condition. Tomlinson and Lucas have already been released.
On, 09/01/2008, it was determined that before running the red light Martinez and another individual were racing down 18th street just before the accident occurred.
Arrest warrants were issued for Benjamin Martinez and a Noe Alejandro Yanez-Palacious, (21), of Waco for 1-count of 2-Vehicle racing causing serious bodily injury and 2-counts of 2-Vehicle racing causing bodily injury. Yanez-Palacious was arrested on these charges at his North Waco residence without incident on, 09/01/2008. At this time Martinez has not been picked up on these new charges.
