Afghan Women Still Abused Despite Law

KABUL, Afghanistan (December 11, 2012)--Afghan women are still victims of abuse despite some success by authorities in prosecuting cases of rape, forced marriages and domestic violence, the United Nations says.

Afghanistan enacted a law to prosecute violence against women in August 2009 that criminalizes child marriage, forced marriage, selling and buying of women to settle disputes, rape and more than a dozen other acts of violence.

The U.N. collected information from 22 of Afghanistan's 34 provinces over a 12-month period ending in September to find out how well the law was being implemented.

The report, released Tuesday, says that although prosecutors and courts are increasingly applying the law, there is still a long way ahead before it can adequately protect Afghan women and girls from violence.
