PARIS (August 13, 2014) At least five French climbers were dead Wednesday in a fall on Mount Blanc in France after a night of snow and wind on the tallest mountain in Western Europe.
A sixth climber was spotted at the bottom of a crevasse and searchers say recovery efforts were underway.
There was no word on the climber's condition, other than that the person was unconscious.
The climbers were taking part in a two-week mountaineering course, and were reported missing overnight when they failed to return to a shelter.
August is the height of the climbing season on Mount Blanc, where, even in the warmest months, storms can strike quickly.
