TUPELO, Miss. (December 24, 2013) One police officer is dead and a second was in critical condition Tuesday after a shootout with suspected bank robbers in Tupelo, Miss.
The officers responded in separate cars to the robbery at around 3:15 p.m. Monday at BancorpSouth.
They both were pursuing the robbers’ car when the suspects stopped, got out and opened fire.
Officer Kevin "Gale" Stauffer, 38, was killed, and a 26-year-old officer, whose name was not released, was seriously injured.
FBI agents were looking Tuesday for at least one suspect who they say might be heavily armed.
The FBI offered a reward of $50,000, which BancorpSouth matched.
Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton said a bystander used a fallen officer's radio to report the shooting, which he said may have saved the second officer's life.
