SUWANEE, Ga. (April 10, 2013)—A SWAT team exchanged gunfire Wednesday evening with a gunman who was holding four firefighters hostage inside a home in suburban Atlanta.
The gunman died and one officer was shot in the hand, Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter said.
The firefighters were not seriously hurt.
Minutes before police announced the rescue at around 6:30 p.m. CDT Wednesday, one big explosion followed by several smaller ones or gunshots were heard in the neighborhood in Suwanee, Ga., about 35 miles northeast of Atlanta.
Authorities say five firefighters were taken hostage after they responded to what appeared to be a routine medical call in Suwanee.
The gunman released one of the five to move a fire truck.
