NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 8, 2013)--A 4-year-old boy who picked up a loaded gun at a family cookout shot and killed the wife of a Tennessee sheriff's deputy, authorities said Monday.
Wilson County Deputy Daniel Fanning was showing his weapons to a relative Saturday in a bedroom of his home in Lebanon, Tenn., when the boy walked in and picked up a gun off the bed, authorities said.
Sheriff Robert Bryan says the weapon discharged, hitting Josephine Fanning, 48, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The child is not related to her or her husband.
Bryan called the shooting a terrible accident.
He said the boy picked up the gun just seconds after Fanning placed it on the bed.
The gun was not Fanning's service weapon and the sheriff says the deputy's weapons are normally stored in a safe.
