NEW DELHI (August 11, 2012)--An overcrowded bus plunged into a deep gorge Saturday in a mountainous area of northern India, killing at least 52 people and injuring more than 40 others.
Police say the driver lost control of the vehicle on a sharp curve about 385 miles north of New Delhi.
The bus then fell about 300 feet into the gorge.
Officials said the bus had seats for 60 people and was so overcrowded that some people were riding on its roof.
Police figures show India has the world's highest road death toll.
More than 110,000 people die each year in accidents often caused by overcrowding, speeding, and poor vehicle and road maintenance.
