Coach Kills Teen During Robbery Attempt Outside School

DETROIT (February 6, 2013)—Ernest Robinson, 70, an assistant high school girls’ basketball coach in Detroit, shot a teenager to death during an attempted robbery outside the school, police said Wednesday.

Police spokeswoman Officer Cassandra Lewis said two teenage boys accosted and tried to rob Robinson Friday evening as he was walking two team members outside King High School.

Lewis says the teenagers struggled with Robinson, who pulled a handgun and fired.

Robinson is a reserve police officer and licensed to carry a concealed pistol, she said.

Detroit Schools' spokesman Steve Wasko said Michael Scott, 16, was killed and an unnamed 15-year-old was wounded.

Prosecutors were reviewing the case Wednesday to determine whether to file charges.

Priscilla Scott told reporters her son did not have a gun.
