CHIHUAHUA, Mexico (October 7, 2013)--The governor of the northern Mexico border state of Chihuahua, Cesar Duarte, says an unauthorized maneuver by the driver of a monster truck caused the truck to plow into a crowd of spectators, killing eight people.
Duarte told Milenio television Monday the driver drove the truck the right way over parked cars to crush them, but says the driver then turned and jumped the cars again in the other direction, putting him closer to spectators.
Duarte said the driver said he drank a couple of sips of beer, but didn't have enough alcohol in his blood to be considered intoxicated.
He said the driver evidently hit his head and lost consciousness after crushing the parked cars.
Duarte said the truck continued to accelerate even after it hit the crowd Saturday.
