DELAWARE, Ohio (December 20, 2013) Former Ohio emergency room doctor Ali Salim was sentenced Friday to more than 36 years in prison for raping and killing an expectant mom who died after receiving a fatal heroin overdose.
Salim faced as much as 37 years in prison when he appeared in court Friday afternoon.
A Delaware County judge handed down the sentence in the case involving a woman who was forced to turn to prostitution to support her two young children after a divorce.
Assistant County Prosecutor Kyle Rohrer says victim Deanna Ballman died after answering a Craigslist ad offering $200.
Salim, 44, pleaded guilty in October to rape and involuntary manslaughter after he was accused of injecting Ballman with heroin.
Rohrer says there's no evidence Ballman used drugs.
The judge called her death the worst crime he's ever seen.
