MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (August 20, 2013)--An explosion Tuesday morning inside a boathouse at the U.S. Navy’s Weapons Station Earle in Middletown, N.J., injured eight sailors and civilian workers and at least one was seriously hurt.
The explosion happened as the eight were doing maintenance work on a boat, the Navy said.
One sailor has been hospitalized with serious injuries while the seven other victims sustained minor injuries, mostly smoke inhalation.
The Navy says no ammunition was involved in the explosion.
The cause is under investigation.
