SACO, Maine (July 28, 2014) A suicidal man who was having financial problems killed his wife, three children and then himself in the family’s apartment in Saco, Maine, authorities said Monday.
Joel Smith, 33, shot his wife and children at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday with a 12-gauge shotgun, investigators say.
Jason Montez, 12, and Noah Montez, 7, were shot to death in their bedrooms.
Heather Smith, 35, and Lily Smith, 4, were shot in the parents' bed.
Joel Smith's body was found on the floor nearby, the gun by his side.
Police say no suicide note was found, but investigators say the wife had told a family friend the night of the shooting that Joel Smith recently had threatened suicide.
Sgt. Christopher Harriman, a state police detective, said the family had domestic issues and financial problems.
