SOUTH EL MONTE, Calif. (February 5, 2013)—A boy and a girl both lost fingers during a game of tug-of-war at their high school in Southern California, authorities said.

Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Miguel Garcia said doctors planned to try to reattach the fingers severed from the hands of two South El Monte High School students.

School district official Edward Zuniga declined to identify the students, but a newspaper reported the girl is a senior on the soccer team and the boy is a football player.

Zuniga says the students were participating in a lunchtime activity in celebration of homecoming Monday.

Authorities didn't say how many fingers were lost or provide details on how the game resulted in the injuries.
