MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (January 31, 2013)--A standoff continued Thursday in rural Alabama, where police say a retired truck driver is holding a 5-year-old boy hostage.
They say the man grabbed the boy off a school bus after shooting and killing the driver.
According to a state lawmaker who has met with authorities and visited the boy's family, the young hostage is watching TV and is getting medication sent from home.
The suspect, identified as Jimmy Lee Dykes, had been scheduled to appear Wednesday in court to face a charge of menacing some neighbors with a gun.
Neighbors describe him as a volatile man with anti-government views who threatened residents at gunpoint and who was viciously violent to wandering pets.
Multiple neighbors identified Dykes, 65, as the man who boarded the school bus, killed the driver and grabbed the boy, whose age was originally believed to be 6.
