Lion Kills Volunteer At Private Animal Sanctuary

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (March 6, 2013)—A female intern-volunteer who got into a cage with a lion Wednesday at a private animal sanctuary in Central California was attacked and killed, Cal Fire spokesman Ryan Michaels told The Associated Press.

The incident happened at the Cat Haven sanctuary in Dunlap, Calif., about 45 miles east of Fresno in the Sierra Nevada foothills.

Michaels said he thinks the lion was put down because law enforcement officers at the scene fired shots, and the Fresno County sheriff's office said on the radio that the animal had been secured.
