Man Says Prayer Group Leader Told Him To Kill Wife

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (November 28, 2012)—Micah Moore, 23, of Kansas City, Mo., who told police he killed a woman to prevent her from telling someone she had been sexually assaulted by men in her prayer group, was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday on a first-degree murder charge, but the hearing was delayed at the request of prosecutors.

Investigators say Moore also told them that he killed the woman, Bethany Deaton, 27, on Oct. 30 at the request of her husband, the prayer group's leader.

Tyler Deaton has not been charged, but the Jackson County prosecutor says he is being investigated in connection with her death.

Deaton did not respond to messages left by phone and social media, requesting comment.

Bethany Deaton's death initially was considered a suicide, but that changed when Moore confessed to police on Nov. 9.

Moore’s attorney, however, said Wednesday his client made up the confession.

Melanie Morgan said Moore didn't kill Deaton, was distraught over her death and made up his confession after other prayer group members dropped him off at the police station.

Morgan did not address Moore's allegations that he killed Deaton at the request of her husband or that Deaton had been sexually assaulted by members of the prayer group.
