CHARLOTTE, N.C. (September 15, 2013)--An unarmed man whom a police officer shot and killed in North Carolina was a former football player at Florida A&M University, FAMU Interim Athletic Director Michael Smith confirmed Sunday.
Jonathan A. Ferrell, 24, evidently was in a traffic accident and went to a nearby house early Saturday to seek help Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
A woman answered the door and then called 911.
Officers found Ferrell a short distance from the home and as they approached him, he ran toward the officers and refused to stop.
Officers stunned him with a Taser, but police said he continued to run toward them.
Officer Randall Kerrick fired his gun, hitting Ferrell several times, police said.
Ferrell died at the scene.
Smith confirmed Sunday that Ferrell played the safety position in 2009-10.
Kerrick was charged with voluntary manslaughter.
