SARASOTA, Fla. (September 3, 2013)--Police in Sarasota, Fla., were investigating Tuesday after a woman shot her 17-month-old daughter and then turned the gun on herself.
An officer who responded Sunday morning to the family’s home reported hearing the girl’s father say repeatedly, “She shot our baby.”
A police report released Tuesday says authorities found Sarah Harnish, 35, lying face down in the doorway in a pool of blood, still holding the gun.
The 17-month-old, Josephine Boice, was found lying in bed with a gunshot wound to the temple, but was still breathing.
She later died at the hospital.
A police statement says the child's father returned home from a scooter ride just before 10 a.m. Sunday, heard shots fired, and then called 911.
No one else was inside the home when it happened.
No other details were released and it's unclear what prompted the shooting.
