SPARKS, Nev. (October 24, 2013) Officials in Sparks, Nev., Thursday released the name of the boy who killed a middle school teacher and injured two students before turning his gun on himself on the campus of Sparks Middle School.
In a prepared statement city officials identified the boy Thursday as Jose Reyes, 12.
He was in the seventh grade.
The city came under pressure from media organizations to release the boy’s name after police refused, saying they wanted to respect his family.
City officials later acknowledged a report from the Univision affiliate in Reno that disclosed the name and said they would release it publicly to be fair to families and other media outlets.
Sparks Middle School teacher Michael Landsberry, 45, died in the attack as he tried to shield students.
