RALEIGH, N.C. (November 22, 2013) Anthony Cannon, a North Carolina newspaper carrier, picked up a teddy bear he spotted along a rural road, only to learn later a bomb was stuffed inside.
Cannon, a carrier for The Shelby Star, said Friday he spotted the toy before dawn Thursday along his route near Lattimore, a tiny town about 50 miles west of Charlotte.
When he picked it up, some sort of container fell out so he left the bear along the road and put the container in his car.
After driving 20 minutes to Shelby and examining the container closely, he realized it could be dangerous.
Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman says Cannon was lucky.
Although the sheriff couldn't speak to the construction of the device, he said it was capable of exploding.
