LEDYARD, Conn. (August 26, 2013)—The reports over the past few months about a large reptile roaming through Ledyard, Conn., turned out to be accurate.
A police officer shot the big lizard to death Sunday as the reptile attacked chickens in a chicken coop outside a woman’s home.
The woman called 911 after spotting what she thought was an alligator in the coop, but it turned out to be a monitor lizard.
The officer killed the lizard as it threatened police and an animal control officer.
Monitor lizards, which can be as big as alligators, are not native to Connecticut.
Police believe the one killed Sunday was an illegal pet that either escaped or was abandoned.
