FERGUSON, Mo. (August 15, 2014) The Ferguson, Mo. police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black teenager in the St. Louis suburb was identified Friday as Darren Wilson.
Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson named the officer Friday.
He said earlier this week he wasn't naming the officer because of death threats.
Michael Brown, 18, was shot Saturday after an officer encountered him and another man on the street.
They say one of the men pushed the officer into his car, then physically assaulted him and struggled with the officer over the officer's weapon.
At least one shot was fired inside the car.
The struggle then spilled onto the street, where Brown was shot multiple times.
Witnesses say the officer fired on Brown as he ran away.
Reports that Jackson released Friday say Brown and his friend, Dorian Johnson, took a box of cigars from a store in Ferguson the morning of Aug. 9.
Jackson says Wilson, a six-year department veteran, encountered the two after reports of the robbery circulated on police radio.
