MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (February 4, 2013)—A 5-year-old boy held hostage for seven days in an underground bunker in Midland City, Ala., was rescued Monday and the gunman who was holding him was killed.
FBI agents stormed the compound just before 3:15 p.m. Monday.
The gunman, Jim Dykes, 65, who took the boy hostage last Tuesday after killing school bus driver, Charles Albert Poland, Jr., 66, was killed, but it was not immediately clear whether agents shot him or he took his own life.
The kindergartner, who’s been identified only as “Ethan,” was not physically harmed, authorities said.
He was taken to a hospital in nearby Dothan, Ala.
In a statement during a brief news conference at 4:30 p.m., an FBI official said the decision to move in was made after “negotiations deteriorated” and Dukes was seen holding a gun, leading authorities to believe the boy was in “imminent danger.”
Daryle Hendry, who lives about a quarter-mile from where Dykes was holed up, says he heard a boom followed by a gunshot Monday afternoon.
