LONDON (July 22 ,2013)--The Duchess of Cambridge, gave birth to a son Monday afternoon London time after going into labor Monday morning.
Prince William's wife Kate delivered the 8-pound 6-ounce boy at 4:24 p.m. London time Monday, but the birth wasn't announced to the media until four hours later.
She was in labor for about 10 hours with William at her beside.
The boy is the couple's first child.
An official birth announcement signed by Kate's doctors was posted on a gilded easel at Buckingham Palace, as tradition dictates.
Royal officials say the couple traveled by car to St. Mary's Hospital in central London without a police escort early Monday morning.
They entered through a side door, avoiding the world's media gathered on the street outside the private Lindo Wing of the hospital, where Princess Diana also gave birth to William and his younger brother, Prince Harry.
Kate was being looked after by a top-notch medical team led by royal gynecologist Dr. Marcus Setchell.
The baby is third in line to become Britain's monarch, after Princes Charles and William.
