Shark Kills California Surfer

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (October 23, 2012)-A California surfer died in a shark attack Tuesday off a beach at coastal Vandenberg Air Force Base.

A friend of the victim’s witnessed the attack, swam to the surfer’s aid and pulled him out of the ocean, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

The friend started first aid while another surfer called for help, but the man was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

The Air Force said the victim was 38 years old and was not associated with the base.

Sheriff's officials say the type of shark involved and other details are under investigation.
