WILLIAMSON, W.Va. (April 3, 2013)—A suspect was in custody Wednesday after Mingo County, W. Va., Sheriff Eugene Crum was shot to death within a block of the county courthouse.
The suspect was also shot and was taken to a hospital, authorities said.
Authorities identified the man they’re holding as Tennis Melvin Maynard, 37, and said he was being treated at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W. Va.
Baylous did not disclose his condition, but said Maynard was shot by a sheriff's deputy after a short pursuit in that ended when Maynard crashed his car.
Crum was elected last year and has been cracking down on the drug trade, but it's unclear whether his death was related to the new Operation Zero Tolerance.
The shooting came just days after the shooting deaths in Texas of Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, in which a white supremacist prison gang is suspected.
Less than two weeks ago, the head of Colorado's prison system was shot to death at his front door, evidently by a white supremacist ex-convict.
