Small City Welcomes Doomsday Bunkers

LOS ANGELES (September 8, 2013)--Residents of Menifee, Calif., about 80 miles east of Los Angeles, can begin to apply for permits to build bunkers this month after the City Council passed a hotly contested ordinance in July allowing the practice.

Survivalists spend big money on state-of-the-art, luxury shelters, but city officials are concerned about toxins in the soil, earthquakes, structural stability and whether police and first responders will be safe responding to emergency calls coming from people hiding out underground.

They also say the underground structures could conceal criminal activity, such as drug manufacturing.
