BRUNSWICK, Ga. (March 22, 2013)--Two teenagers were in custody Friday in Brunswick, Ga., after a baby in a stroller was shot to death and the baby’s mother was wounded.
De'Marquis Elkins, 17, was charged with first-degree murder as an adult, Brunswick Police Chief Tobe Green said, and a 14-year-old was also charged with murder, but he was not identified because he is a juvenile.
The chief said police were still investigating the motive and searching for the weapon.
The infant’s mother, Sherry West, said she was walking near her home Thursday morning with her baby, Antonio, when she was approached by two boys who demanded money.
When she said she didn’t have any, she said one asked, "Do you want me to kill your baby?" before he shot her 13-month-old son in the head.
West said she tried to shield the child, but said the teenage gunman pushed her aside.
She was shot in the leg and another bullet grazed her ear.
