LAS VEGAS (July 10, 2013)--A wind-whipped wildfire burning near Las Vegas has destroyed six structures at a desert ranch several miles from woodsy Mount Charleston hamlets where firefighters were working to protect more than 400 homes.
It's not clear if any homes have been destroyed.
Two firefighters have been hurt battling the Carpenter 1 fire, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Suzanne Shelp said.
A total of 1,077 firefighters are battling the flames, which are spread over almost 40 square miles.
Containment dropped Tuesday to 10 percent.
Smoke from the fire about 25 miles northwest of the city has downtown and the Las Vegas Strip smelling like a campfire.
In northern Nevada, crews reported 40 percent containment of the more than 40-square-mile Bison fire in the mountains near Gardnerville and Carson City.
