TOPEKA, Kan. (December 17, 2012)--A man suspected in the shooting deaths of two Topeka police officers died after an armed standoff with law enforcement personnel at a house in the city.

The man was suspected of killing Cpl. David Gogian, 50, and Jeff Atherly, 29, as they responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle Sunday night.

Shawnee County officials say in a statement that Kansas Bureau of Investigation officers tried to negotiate with the suspect before firing tear gas into the home.

The statement says he emerged from the home carrying a gun and officers shot him.

He was taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries early Monday.

It wasn't clear if the 22-year-old suspect fired his gun.

Police officials announced the news of the officers' deaths Sunday night as a small crowd gathered nearby for a candlelight vigil outside police headquarters.

Gogian had been with the department since September 2004 and Atherly since April 2011.
