Barney Notwithstanding, T-Rex Was Not A Stand-Up Guy

(February 22, 2013)--Tyrannosaurus rex, the terror of the late Cretaceous Period, didn’t stand upright with its tail on the ground, but a lot of young people seem to think so, and the authors of a study blame such characters as Barney and other pop influences for the misconception.

Researchers found evidence that a number of college students and younger people wrongly think T. rex stood upright, even though museums and popular books have correctly shown a more horizontal posture for decades.

The study’s authors say such pop culture icons as Barney have gotten it wrong, and they think that's why young people formed the wrong idea about the dinosaur, which in real life wasn’t purple and bouncy, but instead about 40 feet long and 15 to 20 feet tall with a massive skull, sharp teeth and a powerful jaw that could bore into prey.
