EL PASO (November 9, 2012)--Agents at a West Texas border crossing confiscated nearly $70,000 stuffed in a plastic grocery bag and hidden by a box of doughnuts, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials in El Paso said Friday.
Agents said the driver told them he had nothing to declare Tuesday before preparing to enter Mexico at the Ysleta international crossing, but customers officers found bundles of money wrapped in cellophane and stuck in a plastic grocery bag that was in a larger white bag.
The cash package was on the floor under a box of doughnuts.
Investigators recovered $69,750.
The man also had $5,150 in his pocket and wallet, agents said.
The driver, Gerardo Nares Frias, 33, of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, was taken into custody and his car was seized.
