MILWAUKEE (July 23, 2013)—A cat that turned up in a Milwaukee area animal shelter with 26 toes, eight more than most cats, helped the struggling shelter remain open, at least for a while.
The Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center enlisted the cat in a fundraiser, asking for $26 donations, $1 for each of the cat’s toes, after learning its rent was doubling.
The donations helped raise the money for a new building, with the cat, named Daniel, as the mascot.
But the money is now drying up, and the shelter says it will have to close.
The owner says she hopes to find homes for the remaining 28 animals by the end of the month, but plans to adopt Daniel herself.
