Fisherman Reels In Mammoth Tooth

RYE, N.H. (February 21, 2013)--A fisherman in New Hampshire, who’s discovered whale vertebrae, porpoise skulls and an old fuel tank that he thought was a treasure chest, may have hit the big time when he reeled in what may be a mammoth tooth.

Mike Anderson, of Rye, was fishing for scallops Tuesday near Rye Harbor, N.H., when he noticed a 6-inch, triangular object.

Will Clyde, a University of New Hampshire associate professor of geology, said what Anderson found may be a fossilized mammoth tooth.

He said mammoth and mastodon bones have been dragged up before in nearby waters, although they're more commonly found in the western and southern parts of the country.

He said he wants to take a closer look.

Anderson told the Portsmouth Herald he wants to find a tusk next.
