CASHTON, Wis. (March 28, 2013)--An Illinois man accused of stealing 21 tons of Wisconsin cheese was arrested in New Jersey Tuesday afternoon after he was caught driving a refrigerated truck carrying the 42,000 pounds of Muenster, New Jersey State Police Lt. Stephen Jones said.
The cargo is valued at $200,000.
New Jersey Detective Oliver Sissman said false paperwork was used to obtain the cheese in Wisconsin.
The company from which the cheese was stolen said it can’t guarantee the Muenster hasn’t been tampered with, so it didn’t ask for the product back.
Jones said if the cheese passes inspections by health authorities it will be donated to charity.
