One Texas High School Graduate Was A Yellow Lab

LUBBOCK (June 9, 2014) One member of the Class of 2014 at Roosevelt High School in Lubbock walked across the stage on four legs.

Shawnee, the yellow Lab, wore a cap and gown as she and her owner Jessica Hayes received diplomas at Friday's ceremony.

As a service dog, Shawnee attended classes for three years with Jessica, who has epilepsy.

Shawnee is trained to detect an impending seizure.

Admittedly the dog wasn’t the most attentive of students and in fact was known to snore loudly while napping at Jessica’s feet.

But Shawnee became an honorary 58th member of the senior class, joining students on field trips and in group pictures.

The dog’s diploma and the tassel were a surprise orchestrated by staff members and Hayes' best friend, Alyssa Davis.
