NEW ORLEANS (August 15, 2012)--A 42-year-old chimpanzee named Ginger whose unexpected pregnancy was discovered in February has given birth to a healthy girl.
The chimp gave birth Monday at the Chimp Haven sanctuary for retired research chimpanzees where every male chimp is supposed to have undergone a vasectomy before being shipped to the sanctuary in northwest Louisiana.
Since February, every male in a group with a female and still interested in breeding has been given a newer type of vasectomy and now every female is on birth control.
The baby chimp has not yet been named.
Sanctuary officials say a donor who pays $13,000 a year to support the chimp can name the baby and if that doesn't happen, the sanctuary will take suggestions from the public.
