SAN ANTONIO (March 19, 2013)--A Steinway piano that served as a centerpiece for years at the St. Anthony Hotel in San Antonio was sold at auction in California and will be returned to Texas.
A member of the hotel’s ownership group bought the ornate grand piano for $220,000 from a private collector, but officials with BC Lynd Hospitality said the buyer wishes to remain unidentified.
The piano will be on loan to the hotel.
The piano was built in 1924 for an unidentified purchaser and then was purchased in 1938 by St. Anthony owner Ralph Morrison.
The railroad tycoon paid $27,000 and moved the piano to his hotel.
The instrument remained at the St. Anthony until 1993 when it was shipped to California.
Bonhams in San Francisco conducted Monday's sale.
