Picture Sold For $12 At Thrift Store Was Worth A Lot More

MILWAUKEE (December 2, 2012)--A picture that sold for about $12 at a thrift store in Milwaukee turned out to be a print by American artist Alexander Calder worth $9,000, and it was at least the fourth time in six months that valuable art has turned up at Goodwill.

A spokeswoman for the charity said workers try to spot valuables and auction them off on a website, but some are missed, which is part of what makes shopping there such an adventure.

The picture sold in Milwaukee called "Red Nose" is an abstract image that resembles the face of an ape, all black and white except for a red nose.

Its buyer, media relations specialist Karen Mallet, has no immediate plans to sell it.
