ROCKPORT (March 29, 2013)—Wildlife experts are using recordings to lure black skimmers that have laid claim to a sandy patch in a Rockport Beach Park traffic circle to a safer spot.
The recording of a black skimmer mating call will be played on a loop in hopes of luring the birds to a safer nesting spot a few yards away.
Owen Fitzsimmons with the Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program said the effort is intended to improve the situation without harassing the skimmers.
Nesting is expected to start in a few weeks.
In mid-2010 someone moved barricades protecting the Rockport Beach Park skimmers and drove through the colony, killing several dozen chicks.
