KURTEN (July 17, 2014) A domesticated one-eyed emu has been returned to its owners thanks to sheriff’s deputies and some good Samaritans.
Mariann Balcar and her mother discovered the bird, whose name is believed to be Elliot, wandering near a road Wednesday near Kurten in Brazos County.
Concerned about the emu’s wellbeing, they used bread and vanilla wafers to lure the bird to safety and then used a hog trap to capture the emu until county animal control deputies located the bird's owners.
Balcar says the emu was tame and friendly.
Sgt. Kris Fraley with the Brazos County Sheriff's Office says the bird belong to a family that has raised it since it was little.
He called emu sightings a rare occasion in the area.
