MOSCOW (October 5, 2012)-- Alexei Tikhonov of the St. Petersburg Zoology Institute says a well-preserved mammoth that may have been killed by Ice Age man has been found in the permafrost of northern Siberia.

Tikhonov said Friday his team spent five days in September extracting the body from frozen mud on the Sopochnaya Karga cape, 2,200 miles northeast of Moscow.

He told The Associated Press the 16-year-old mammoth was 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighed 1,100 pounds.

It was named Jenya after the 11-year-old boy who found it.

Tikhonov said the mammoth was "possibly" killed by a human or a rival mammoth.

He said Jenya's body was one of the best-reserved carcasses of a grown mammoth, but its damaged DNA was "hardly" suitable for cloning.
