DALLAS (July 8, 2014) The Republican National Committee picked Cleveland over Dallas Tuesday as the site for the party’s 2016 convention and Dallas officials say the city’s inability to offer a June date hurt their bid.

RNC chairman Reince Priebus didn't announce a date, but June 27 or July 18, 2016, are the two options under consideration.

Party officials want an earlier convention after last year's event in late summer, but Dallas couldn't host a convention in June because the American Airlines Center could end up hosting NBA or NHL playoff games that month.

Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau CEO Phillip Jones, who said the RNC notified him just before Priebus' televised announcement, said he was disappointed, but said he will work now to book new business for that summer.
