WEATHERFORD (October 15, 2013)--Three Parker County sheriff’s deputies were on administrative leave Tuesday after an armed fugitive was shot to death during a standoff.
Winford Watkins was shot and killed early Tuesday after he pointed a gun at the deputies at a rural home near Weatherford, about 20 miles west of Fort Worth, Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler said.
Texas Rangers will help investigate.
Watkins had failed to appear in court for a hearing during which he was sentenced to 45 years in prison for burglary of a habitation and felony theft.
Monday afternoon a deputy pulled Watkins over in a routine traffic stop and noticed a gun in the vehicle before Watkins drove away.
Deputies converged on the home Monday night.
Watkins had served time for drug possession, burglary and credit card abuse.
